1.0    Purpose

This policy establishes guidelines for instructors who may teach a relative or individual with whom the instructor has a close personal relationship that could raise a perception of impropriety.

4.0    Policy

The policy of Casper College is to ensure the following.

4.1    Instructors treat all students fairly without bias.

4.2    Students are not advantaged or disadvantaged because of a familial or personal relationship.

4.3    Instructors do not provide instruction that earns academic credit or a formal certification to a student who is a relative or with whom they have a close personal relationship that could raise a perception of impropriety.

5.0    Definitions

5.1    Academic Nepotism. Instructors showing favoritism to a relative or someone with whom they have a close personal relationship that could raise a perception of impropriety.

5.2    Relative. This group includes the following family members: spouse, child, parent, sibling, grandparent, grandchild, step-parent, step-children, step-sibling, mother-in-law, father-in-law, sister-in-law, brother-in-law, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, or first cousin.

6.0    Responsibilities

6.1    Instructors are responsible for identifying potential academic nepotism violations, working with students to resolve academic nepotism situations, and submitting petitions for exception to this policy

6.2    Deans are responsible for responding to petitions for exceptions to this policy.

6.3    The executive dean for continuing education (EDCE) is responsible for ensuring compliance with this policy for non-credit classes and for responding to petitions for exceptions to this policy.

6.4    The vice president for academic affairs (VPAA) is responsible for ensuring compliance to this policy for credit classes and for reviewing a dean’s written response to petitions for exceptions to this policy.

7.0    Procedures

7.1    Instructors, upon becoming aware that a relative or a person with whom they have a close personal relationship that could raise a perception of impropriety is interested in or has enrolled in their class, should advise the student of the academic nepotism policy and work with the student to resolve the situation. If the student wishes to enroll in or remain in the class, the instructor must submit a written petition on the student’s behalf to the appropriate dean for credit classes or the EDCE for non-credit classes.

Deans or the EDCE will approve or deny the request in writing within five business days. Deans send a copy of their written decisions to the VPAA for review.

7.2    The Academic Affairs Office will keep a copy of the written decision on file for credit classes and the EDCE will keep a copy on file for non-credit classes.
